James R. Pace is a CAS Distinguished Professor of Visual Art (ret) at The University of Texas at Tyler where he taught beginning in 1985. He holds an MFA from Arizona State University, and a BFA from the University of Oklahoma. Pace was appointed to the Ogé Professorship in Visual Art, the White Fellowship for Excellence In Teaching, was nominated as the Piper Professor, the Regents Fellow, and received the Chancellor’s Council Teaching Award. He was awarded a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship and multiple University Research Grants. Pace trained in the Tamarind Summer Printmaking Program and participated in the International Artist Residency Program in Budapest, Hungary. He continues to serve as a juror, lecturer and visiting artist at museums, galleries, art centers, and universities throughout the states as well as in Germany and Japan.
Pace has exhibited his work nationally and internationally since 1976 and has received numerous awards for his paintings, drawings, prints, and mixed media work. His work is found in collections from Los Angeles to New York, from Paris to Punjab.
He maintains an active practice in a studio located in the forest of East Texas, where he lives with his wife, Philana Oliphant, daughter Aza, and their rescued dogs.
